Camel Rides in Morocco

Ride a camel over the golden Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga at sunset or sunrise, or trek to a desert camp for the night. Short on time? Ride in the Agafay desert or the Palmeraie near Marrakech. All rides are private and led by our local team from Rissani.

Quick answer

Where is the best camel ride in Morocco?

In Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Choose a short sunset or sunrise ride, or a trek with a night in a desert camp. Most travelers reach Merzouga from Marrakech on the 3-day tour or the slower 4-day tour. With only one day in Marrakech, Agafay or the Palmeraie is the easiest choice.

Agafay or Palmeraie near Marrakech

A first taste of camel riding without leaving Marrakech: the stony Agafay desert with Atlas views, or the Palmeraie palm grove. There are no sand dunes here.

What to expect on a camel ride

A guide walks with you. The camel man leads your camel on foot at a slow, steady pace, so no riding experience is needed.

Getting on and off. The camel kneels so you can climb on. Lean back as it stands up and again as it kneels down; your guide shows you how.

What to wear. Long, light pants, closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for the sun and sand. Bring a warm layer for sunrise and winter evenings.

Best time of year. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the most comfortable. In summer, ride only at sunset or sunrise.

Questions About Camel Rides

Where can I ride a camel in Morocco?

Merzouga, in the Erg Chebbi dunes, is the best. Zagora has smaller dunes and camps, two days from Marrakech. Near Marrakech, Agafay and the Palmeraie offer same-day rides.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. Sunset has the warmest colors; sunrise is quieter and cooler. An overnight trek gives you both.

Can I ride a camel near Marrakech?

Yes, in Agafay or the Palmeraie, with a same-day return. For tall dunes, choose Zagora or Merzouga.

Can I ride a camel in Tangier or Casablanca?

There are no desert dunes near either city. From Casablanca, our camel ride day trip to Marrakech takes you to the Palmeraie or the Agafay desert and back the same day. Our longer tours from Tangier and Casablanca include a camel trek and a night in the Merzouga dunes.

Do I need riding experience?

No. A guide leads the camel on foot. If you have back problems or are pregnant, tell us in advance and we will advise you.
